Everything you should know about the laser hair removal
The high technologies nowadays allow us to forget the old fashioned and unpleasant hair removal procedures which are also painful and effective only for a short period of time.
The effect of shaving is only 1-2 days and with waxing the effect lasts for only 2-3 weeks. After that the painful hair removal procedure has to be performed again and let’s not forget about the period of discomfort when we have to wait for the hair to grow to the required length.
Advantages of the laser hair removal
– It can be performed at any time of the year
– It is suitable for patients with skin phototype I-IV (V-mulatto skin, VI-dark skin)
– VDerm has a brand new epilation laser for skin phototype I-VI
– The effect lasts for a very long time in comparison to the known methods
– It does not irritate the skin
Safety
Our medical equipment has been approved by the FDA (Food Drug Administration) – USA and by the MDD (Medical Device Derective) – EU as being a safe system for permanent hair removal.
Number of procedures
A number of procedures have to be performed in order to provide a successful epilation for our clients. The interval between the procedures, which is individual for every patient, will be assessed by our doctors (the recommended interval has to be at least 4 weeks for the face and sometimes 6 weeks for the body). It is important to know that the face is a more difficult area than the body and more procedures may be needed. For achieving an optimal effect there may be additional procedures but this is in rare cases.
The number of procedures depends on:
– whether the hair is lighter or darker
– whether the hair growth is caused by hormones
– whether there is an excessive hair growth caused by genetic factors
– whether it is influenced by previous or current intake of medications
Expected results from the laser epilation procedure
The perfect results depend not only on the excellent maintenance and high quality of the medical equipment together with qualified doctors and a medical cosmetician trained to work with it, but the results also depend on other factors like age, color and density of the hair, skin color, hormone balance, intake of medicine, steroids, etc.
These factors influence the number of the procedures, which have to be performed in an interval of 4-6 weeks. This aims to cover all hairs which are in an active growing phase. If hairs appear in the interval between procedures, you can remove them with a depilatory cream or a razor because pulling them out will vitiate the next procedure.
Laser and photoepilation are similar because they remove hair by means of light. However, NONE of the two methods can give:
- 100% pain-free procedures because some people have a high pain threshold and some people have a low pain threshold, the area of treatment is also important
- 100% hair removal in a given area and with every patient (people who achieved a 100% hair removal are barely 2-3%)
- PERMANENT hair removal in a given area
You can reach to this conclusion in a logical way yourself when you think about the new hair that substitutes the old one which was alive for some years. The new hair is very little every year of course and because of this only maintaining procedures are needed so that the reduced percentage remains higher and the client – satisfied!
The thing in common between the laser and photoepilation is that the treated area has to be protected from acquiring natural or fake tan (except when using fake skin toning oils). If the tan is stronger the risk of skin burning is bigger.
Here is why you shouldn’t stay in the sun or go to the tanning salon if you want to achieve great results from the laser hair removal
It is recommended that you should avoid direct sunlight and tanning salons because the darker skin (caused by sunlight or a tanning bed) contains much more pigment and easily absorbs the energy of the rays created by the laser. This may lead to unwanted side effects for your skin. This applies to all lasers not only the one we work with.
You shouldn’t stay in the sun or go to the tanning salon when planning a photoepilation because most of the photoepilation cosmetic devices don’t have protection against skin heating. They also don’t have a different level of impulse with which they work. That is why it is mandatory to avoid long sun exposure for about 14 days before and after the procedure if you plan a photoepilation. Another reason is that the hair becomes lighter in color when exposed to sunlight and its heating gets harder (every device works on this principle). We should protect the skin on one hand and on the other hand the low energy won’t be enough to destroy the follicle. This may lead to additional procedures and may decrease the effect of the hair removal in time.
Long-term side effects
Such side effects have not been registered. Something that shows the effectiveness of the procedure is the slight redness that appears in the treated area, but it subsides in a few minutes or 1-2 hours after the epilation procedure. In rare cases a little more time is needed for the redness to disappear.
Getting ready for the laser epilation
Before the epilation
The area which is going to be treated should be depilated (by shaving or by using a depilation cream) two days before the epilation. If you had a waxing procedure you should wait 3 weeks before starting the laser epilation.
In comparison to the photoepilation we don’t use a contact gel which slows us down with its applying and cleaning. The gel is also sticky after the epilation procedure.
After the epilation
We recommend you should use a sunscreen on the treated places for at least 2 weeks if the procedures are performed during the summer or if the sun is strong (use sun protective factor 50 or 30 for your body).
The hair starts falling from the 4th day forward. People don’t feel anything after the laser epilation procedure and they can go back to their daily routine.
Everything we should know before the procedure
The laser epilation does not require a special preparation of the skin, although it is good to make a consultation with a dermatologist before the procedure. The type of skin, the aim of the procedure and the desired results will be commented on the consultation. For a better effect of the laser epilation it is required that the skin should be either shaved or shortly trimmed two days before the procedure. You shouldn’t pull the hairs out because the melanin which is situated in the hair root has to stay in the follicle and when the procedure is made the two should be destroyed. If the hair is pulled out the follicle will not be destroyed.
Contraindications for performing the procedure: use of Retin-A acid, systemic retinoids, Tetracycline antibiotics, oral contraceptives, dermabrasion, pregnancy, Herpes simplex virus and any other active infectious conditions.
It is absolutely forbidden to stay in the sun or go to the tanning salon one month before or after the procedure. This is because melanin increases in the skin in order to protect it from UV lights. The device cannot distinguish between the protective pigment and the one in the hair. This can lead to unwanted burns or a hyperpigmentation during the procedure. The skin becomes sensitive to ultraviolet lights after the manipulation and this is why a sunscreen is applied everyday between 2-3 hours and a month after the procedure.
How many procedures are needed
It is proven that the hair on our body goes through a few phases during its life cycle. The main phases are anagen (growth phase), catagen (growing outwards) and telogen (rest phase). In a certain period of time different percentage of hairs are in one of the phases. The procedure has an effect only on the hairs that are in the growth phase. This is the reason why all the treated hairs can’t be removed at once. 5-6 procedures are needed and this is individual for every patient.
